Shirodhara

Shirodhara is one of the treatments used in Ayurveda. Its name derives from Sanskrit words “Shira” means head and “dhara” means continuous flow i.e.  herbal decoctions, oils, medicated ghee or milk are administered over the forehead in a form of continuous stream (dhara) over an extended period of time. The process is carried out for about 40 minutes in a day for a period of 7 to 21 days. Thorough oleation is done over the head with Oils prior to Dhara Karma. This treatment is very effective for people suffering with Insomnia, loss of memory, Hair fall, Early graying of Hair, Chronic headaches, Mental tension, Anxiety, Stress, Depression, and Neurological Ailments.

About Shirodhara Treatment

About Shirodhara Treatment

Treatment usually begins with the body scrub and then the Shirodhara. During this treatment, flowing liquids from metal pot are poured onto the patient’s forehead. This pot is usually hung above and the treated person is lying down on the massage table, slightly warmed.

Sometimes, there might be some soft music in the background of the atmosphere. Another pot is collecting the liquid pouring down the body. Collected liquid is commonly used to massage the body. The treatment ends wrapping the person into moist towels to contain the warmth.

A steady stream of liquid, poured onto the patient’s forehead helps the person relax and feel good.

Shirodhara treatment may be performed with different liquids, such as buttermilk, medicated milk, coconut water, plain water or some herbal oils. The type of liquid used for Shirodhara depends on the required treatment.
