A tear in the anal canal is called anal fissure. It causes pain and extreme discomfort. During defecation some amount of bleeding may also occur. Burning sensation, itching, irritation are usually seen. There may be spasm in the anal region due to protective mechanism and the patients are scared of passing stools.
Usually the pain subsides in a hour or so. But in some cases excruciating pain may persist whole day. It may be due to underlying inflammation and infection. Recurrent anal fissure which has not been treated properly give rise to an extra skin growth known as sentinel tag.
