Fissures

Anal Fissure Problem and its treatment through Ayurveda

A tear in the anal canal is called anal fissure. It causes pain and extreme discomfort. During defecation some amount of bleeding may also occur. Burning sensation, itching, irritation are usually seen. There may be spasm in the anal region due to protective mechanism and the patients are scared of passing stools.

Usually the pain subsides in a hour or so. But in some cases excruciating pain may persist whole day. It may be due to underlying inflammation and infection. Recurrent anal fissure which has not been treated properly give rise to an extra skin growth known as sentinel tag.

Management

An acute anal fissure usually surgery is done. The commonest adverse effect of surgery is incontinence where patient is unable to hold stools. In Ayurveda, anal fissure can be treated effectively using Ayurveda – “Kshar Karma”. In this therapy certain medicines are applied to fissure to promote the healing. Weekly application of Kshar Karma is done and with in 3-4 sittings fissure usually heals.

Besides this regulation of bowl habits is done by ayurvedic herbs and formulation. Hot sitz bath and application of soothing medicated ointments, oil like jatyadi oil, kassiadi oil etc. helps in fast healing of fissure.

In chronic anal fissure with associated Sentinel tag – Ksharsutra ligation is used to remove the tag followed by “Kshar Karma” sittings.
